Looks like we have a ways to go to move beyond 15th place out of currently 22 Meraki networks. How about seeing if we can add a few more nodes/repeaters to help expand the RFW network? $50 one-time is a small price to pay to help grow our regional wireless freenet!

Every so often we like to surf around and see what other freenet initiatives/projects are up to. We came across an interesting marketing plan for U-Link, an initiative based in Missouri, that highlights marketing free wireless to apartment tenants/residents.
This could be a good way to market the RFW initiative to area developers, property owners/managers and residents and tenants. We also highlighted this on a post recently made at our discussion forum where a local property manager expressed a valid concern about file sharing, etc.

Glad to hear via the Hills & Heights community blog that FiOS is coming to that area! Since they mentioned RFW in their plug, I thought it only fair to reciprocate! An RFW gateway hooked up to a FiOS connection would open up a lot of possibilities. When another RFW radio “sees” a main gateway node (the unit connected to the Internet), this simply expands the network further, building a mesh-type infrastructure and allowing more and more people to jump on.

Every so often we check our daily stats to see how much data is being moved across the Richmond Free Wireless network. As of this moment, we’ve had 10 users in the last day download over 1.5Gb of data. Overall, we’ve had 66 users download over 4Gb of data since we’ve established the network only a couple of months ago. Not too bad for a fledgling free wireless network that doesn’t actively market itself.

For those of you connecting to our network, Meraki issued a post in their forums today regarding slowness issues:
We have been experiencing unexpected slow database response throughout the morning. Symptoms include not being able to access https://dashboard.meraki.com or seeing HTTP 500 errors while navigating through the site. We are working on tuning the database. This issue will not effect your local network unless your users are trying to access the billing portion.
FYI, we’re not using the billing software.
